Outsourcing Legal Work

Jan Novak, Associate Director jan.novak@law.csuohio.edu | November 15, 2006 - 15:32

A few years ago the issue of outsourcing legal research work caused quite a buzz when it was reported that Thomson (West) Publishing began a pilot project hiring lawyers in India to write headnotes for cases. Today LLRX.com published a new study tracking trends, Developments in Legal Outsourcing and Offshoring. The authors analyze the growth in offshore legal service companies, and conclude that while offshore legal research seems unlikely to flourish, substantive areas such as patent review, immigration, contract drafting and document review are increasingly amenable to offshore work. They predict that secretarial support, document processing and administrative work are potentially even stronger candidates for outsourcing.
