Summer LexisNexis/Westlaw Research

Laura E. Ray, Educational Programming Librarian, laura.ray@law.csuohio.edu | May 08, 2007 - 14:56

Nongraduating students' access to LexisNexis and Westlaw will automatically be restricted as of June 1st, 2007, unless they extend their access on the LexisNexis and Westlaw Web sites. Graduating students can also extend their access through July 31st, 2007 using the same extension processes.

On LexisNexis, summer access is generally limited to career materials. To have full access, log on to LexisNexis. Once logged on, click on the box within the right column of boxes that displays "Need Access to LexisNexis this Summer? Summer Access Register Now." At the next page, the system will display a brief explanation of the LexisNexis Summer Access Program. Below that explanation, click on the "Summer Access Registration" link. At the next page, enter the appropriate information for your legitimate summer access. Summer access is considered legitimate for students enrolled in school; doing school-related, Moot Court, Law Review or Journal research; working as a professor's research assistant, enrolled in a non-profit externship, or enrolled in an unpaid internship/externship. Graduating students, note that studying for the bar is also a legitimate summer access.

On Westlaw, summer access is generally limited to two hours of usage and a print limit of 600,000 lines in June and again in July. To have full access, log on to Westlaw. Once logged on, click on the box within the right column of boxes that displays "Need Westlaw this summer? Extend Your Password Now! Expires July 31." At the next page, enter the appropriate information for your summer extension. Summer access is extended for students enrolled in school or on Moot Court; doing Law Review or Journal work; doing a project for a professor; or doing unpaid non-profit public interest internship/externship or pro bono work required for graduation. Graduating students, note that you have a seperate Westlaw extension process and access perimeter.

Before June 30th, 2007, graduating students will receive an email from Westlaw about the summer password program. You are supposed to be able to click on a link within this email to receive a new Westlaw password. The passwords for graduating students will only be good for ten hours or sixty days through July 31st, 2007.

If you have any questions, contact your LexisNexis and Westlaw representatives. Their contact information is on the LexisNexis for Law Schools and Westlaw Web sites, but does not display till after you log on.
