Zotero Lawsuit Dismissed

Sue Altmeyer, Electronic Services Librarian, sue.altmeyer@law.csuohio.edu | June 08, 2009 - 16:11

Good news for academics and others who use Zotero, a free Firefox extension, to organize research and create footnotes and bibliographies. The lawsuit filed by Endnote, a seller of similar reference management software, has been dismissed. See "EndNote Maker's Lawsuit over Open-Source Zotero Dismissed", John Timmer, ARS Technica, June 5, 2009. Reuters (makers of Endnote) sued George Mason University, who supports Zotero, claiming Zotero's ability to import Endnote files violated George Mason's licensing agreement for the Endnote software. The suit was file in the Fairfax (Virginia) Circuit Court. No word on whether the decision will be appealed. Also see: "Judge Dismisses Software-Licensing Case Against George Mason U.", Chronicle of Higher Education, June 5, 2009. Thanks to Jan Novak for the tip.

For more information on Zotero, see our Reference Management Software for Legal Scholarship page.

Note that Zotero only has Bluebook law review format, while Endnote and Legal Citation have both Bluebook law review and Bluebook brief format. Currently, Zotero's Bluebooking format is not that accurate. However, Zotero is improving all the time and it's still a great way to organize research.

Zotero is an open source project with an open community. So if you find problems with the style(s), report them.

FWIW, the Zotero citation processing engine is currently being rewritten by Frank Bennett, who is also a legal scholar.

I'm glad to hear the lawsuit has been dismissed. This tool has helped a lot of academics.
