I hesitate to post this during exam period, but here goes.
Check out yesterday’s post by blogger Aaron Schmidt from Walking Paper on no babies in the library. It’s worth a click, if only for the über-cute baby pic.
But the point he makes is a good one, too: if we wouldn’t
think of banning a crying baby from a library, then why ar
e we so apt to ban
cell phones? Both, he points out, are occasionally loud disrupters of library
patrons.
This prompted me to pull out a copy of the C-M Law Library’s Patron Code of Conduct to look up any pertinent information. It states: “Please be respectful of those who are trying to study. We recommend you leave the library if you need to talk to anyone on a cellular phone.”
With our middle-of-the-road cell phone policy in mind, I hope the library is a pleasant place for studying during this exam period.

Do you want daily e-mail delivery of C-M blog posts? Or perhaps you want to keep getting e-mail notification of C-M blog posts after you graduate and no longer have a student e-mail account? All you have to do is enter your e-mail address in the box on the righthand side of the blog, labeled "Subscribe Via Email, Enter Your E-mail Address" and follow the instructions.
Of course, you can always subscribe to the blog via an RSS Reader such as Bloglines. If you have an RSS Reader set up, just click on the link "RSS 2.0" on the righthand side of the page.

Graduation is a time for celebration and hopefully all of you will remember your time at Cleveland Marshall as a great experience. I'm sure the first question you are asking is, by golly jeez will I still be able to use the Law Library? Well of course you can! As an alumni you can fill out a form for, now get ready for it, an alumni card. Don’t like social interaction? Then here is the link for the online form. The alumni card functions pretty much the same way as your CSU ID. You can still check out books and use Ohio Link. Another benefit is the use of the alumni room which has a computer accessible to the internet and attached printer. You can access Lexis or Westlaw, but only if you have your own subscription. Alumni also have many other services available to them, but I'm still bummed about Borowski blowing another save against the Red Sox last night, so click here for everything else you need to know.

Did you borrow any OhioLINK books this semester? Maybe for seminar papers or cite checking? Now's the time to check your patron record, and see if those books are due! You can renew OhioLINK books up to four times, but eventually you'll have to return them.
Why remind you? Because OhioLINK fines are steep - $0.50 per day for overdue materials and then if you are billed for a book you still don't return, you're facing a $125.00 replacement fine. Not pretty, I know.
So bring us back our [OhioLINK] books, or we'll call you up and sing you this until you do!

1. Find the California Supreme Court case where an actor's son sued to recover profits made by a movie studio for the licensing of the Count Dracula character, which the actor had portrayed. What is the
citation? How many ALR articles cited this case?
2. Find the California case which held that a seller of a home could be liable for fraudulent concealment, when seller failed to disclose to the buyer that the house was the site of multiple murders.
3. In Ohio, what is the maximum fine and prison sentence for the offense of abuse of a corpse? If you need a hint, look at Criminal Sentences in Ohio by the Cleveland Law Library.
4. "Words and Phrases" lists two bankruptcy cases defining "ghost-writing". What are the citations for these cases? (You can also find the answer on Westlaw by using the words-phrases field, but you will get three cases.)
5. What is the citation for the Florida case where parents sued to bar certain symbols and costumes from Halloween celebrations in public schools, on the basis that these symbols and costumes violated the establishment clause because they promoted the wiccan religion.

So Many Books, So Little Time...Well that's the case made at the Public Services Desk. So to help manage all your due dates, the University Library will be emailing courtesy notices to your CSU email account 3 days prior to your book coming due. This does not apply to our video collection, being it's only a 7 day loan. You may ask yourself...self why is this important?
As some of you may or may not know, you have 2 email addresses. Once you are enrolled in CSU, a CSU email address is created...Looks something like this...j.mathewson@csuohio.edu...(fill in your name where mine appears). Fear not, you can still receive emails from CSU by forwarding your CSU email to your CSU LAW email.
Allow me to walk you through the process...
Log into your CampusNet
https://campusnet.csuohio.edu/index.jsp
Under your Personal tab, click on Email...you should see your CSU email with an option to forward....Click on forward...enter your Law Email address in the box and then save.
By doing this, not only will you receive your courtesy notices (including Ohiolink notices) but any other emails sent from the University keeping you informed as to what's happening on your campus.
If you should have any questions, please stop by the Public Services Desk. We'd be happy to help!

The Law Library is now able to get Interlibrary Loan articles electronically delivered via Odyssey, the OhioLINK Electronic Document Delivery service. As you may know, OhioLINK has a vast collection of electronic journals available through its Electronic Journal Center (EJC). However, many journals are not available via the EJC, and articles often need to be ordered through an Interlibrary Loan service. This is where Odyssey comes in. Interlibrary Loan articles ordered from OhioLINK institutions used to take an average of 3 days to arrive at the Law Library. With Odyssey, articles are received the moment they are transmitted by the OhioLINK lending library.
To make an Interlibrary Loan article request, Cleveland-Marshall College of Law faculty and students simply fill out the Interlibrary Loan Copy Request Form available through the Law Library's Interlibrary Loan Web site. You can also stop by the Law Library's public services desk to complete a form. As usual, Law Library staff will notify you when we receive your article. Whenever possible, we will get your article delivered electronically via Odyssey. If requested, we can even attach a "pdf" version of the document to an E-mail. Just indicate in the comments section of the Interlibrary Loan Copy Request Form that you would like an electronic version sent via E-mail.
Please remember, if the article you need is only available outside the state of Ohio, it will take an average of 5 to 8 days to be received, unless the institution supports Odyssey or another electronic delivery method (such as E-mail).
For questions regarding Odyssey or Interlibrary Loan, please contact Tom Hurray at (216) 523-7396, or e-mail: ill@law.csuohio.edu

Earlier this semester Associate
Dean Michael Slinger advised that the University and Law Libraries were
adopting a PIN (Personal Identification Number) requirement for access to
Scholar records and OhioLINK databases. The PIN feature has now been
enabled. You will be prompted for a PIN when you view your own record or
request a locally available item through Scholar. To set up your
PIN:
For more information about PINs, see: http://www.ulib.csuohio.edu/pin.html

Please do not hesitate to ask any of us at the Public Services Desk for
assistance if necessary. Jan
Dear Students,
Below you will find an important announcement about the adoption of a Personal
Identification Number (PIN) requirement for access to certain Scholar and
OhioLINK services. This PIN requirement is being instituted campus wide
not just at the
Personal Identification Number (PIN) to be Required For Scholar and the
OhioLink Databases Access
The attempt by many unscrupulous persons from throughout the world to steal
personal information has become an unfortunate part of everyday life. This
invasion of privacy has required those entrusted with data protection to meet
these threats by increasing the security necessary to safeguard personal
information. Unfortunately, libraries, and the online information access they
provide, have not been immune from the attempts of thieves to find ways to take
personal information for their own purposes as well as gain illegal access to
information resources. This has been an increasing problem for libraries
throughout the
This will be an easy process to accomplish and will ensure a higher level of
protection for personal library records as well as for the information licensed
for the exclusive use of the CSU community.
We expect to initiate the implementation of PIN in the next few weeks. At
that time we will announce it via email. However, if you miss the
announcements, it will be clear to you that implementation has begun when you
attempt to view your own record, or access the OhioLINK databases. When
that happens, you will be prompted for your PIN, you will then need to go into
“View Your Own Record” in Scholar and enter a PIN (any combination of 4 to 8
letters and/or numbers). You will be prompted to enter your PIN a second
time, to confirm your choice. Then you can logout to continue your
database searching or other activities.
Once you have established your PIN, the most important thing for you to keep in
mind will be to REMEMBER YOUR PIN. Your PIN is secure because no one but
you will know your PIN. Your PIN will not be available to staff, it will be
known only to you. However, in the event you do forget your PIN, you will have
to contact the Law Library Circulation Desk X2250 to cancel your old PIN and
set up a new one.
If you have any questions please let me or Associate Director of the Law
Library Jan Novak (X6913) know.
Thank You.

Paper writing season is upon
us, as a C-M student you are blessed with a number of very useful tools to help
you accomplish your research. One of the best sources for obtaining print
material not found in our own Library is via the OhioLINK service. OhioLINK is a
wonderful tool; however when utilizing your OhioLINK borrowing privileges it is
very important that you remain aware of OhioLINK’s policies
regarding overdue and non returned materials, as well as the steps you can take
to avoid incurring fines. Please remember OhioLINK fines are expensive, and
you remain liable for replacement fines until the material is returned to our Law
Library Circulation Desk as well as accrued overdue fines:
OhioLINK fine policy
explained
An individual who checks out OhioLINK materials is
personally responsible for all fines that accrue. It is up to you to know when
your materials are due and take steps to renew them when necessary.
When you check an OhioLINK book out from the Law Library, we clearly stamp the
due date on the front banner and place a slip outlining OhioLINK policy in the
book, re-iterating the fact that all OhioLINK fines are Non-Waiverable.
The loan period for OhioLINK books is 21 days. You may renew books up to four
times, assuming no one else has placed a hold on the item. Please note: you
must review your materials each time they come due, OhioLINK does not
automatically renew your materials even when they are eligible for renewal.
Non-book, or special items, may not be renewed.
Please remember OhioLINK fines are quite
substantial. OhioLINK charges all patrons an overdue fee of $.50 a day per book
for overdue materials. Books returned more than 30 days overdue are
assessed a Non-Waiverable fine of $50.00. OhioLINK replacement charges
for lost or destroyed books are $125.00 per item. Special Items, such as
videotapes and CD’s, are due in 7 days from the day of checkout, and cannot be
renewed. Those items accrue an overdue charge of $1.00 a day after
that. To avoid these fines, all books and materials will need to be
either renewed if allowable or returned by the due date.
How to forward your E-mail from the CSU Campus to
get Overdue notices
E-Mail notification of overdue OhioLINK materials is a courtesy sent to your
CSU email account, not your Law School email account, unless you take
the affirmative step to forward CSU email to your Law School account. To
forward your CSU email to your Law School or other account of your
choice, log onto CampusNet
, Click the E-Mail tab at the top which will take you to the screen that
enables you to forward your E-Mail. Failure to check these messages or to
adhere to the return deadlines does not excuse you from responsibility for any
fines that may accrue. If you’ve
never used CampusNet before, or forgot your password, simply dial the I.S.
&T help line at ext. 5050 and they will issue you a password.
How to check your own record
You may access the View Your Own Record
option of Scholar, the online catalog, at any time of day or night. This
means you can renew your items 24 hours a day, assuming there are no
holds on the item or the materials are not overdue. If someone has placed a hold on the item, your renewal will be
blocked, and the material must be returned promptly by the due date, or you
will be responsible for any library fines that may accrue. If you would
like to renew by phone you may call (216) 687-2250. Or you may renew in person
at the Law Library’s Circulation Desk. You do not need to have the book
with you in order to renew.
If you have questions about the OhioLINK policies or
about the status of your current charge outs please don't hesitate to contact
the Library Circulation Desk at 687-2250.

Rome: the Power of Film to Teach Foundations of Roman and Civil Law has been accepted as a program for the July 2007 American Association of Law Libraries (AALL) Annual Meeting in New Orleans. Coordinated and moderated by Laura Ray, MA, MLS, Cleveland-Marshall College of Law Educational Programing Librarian, this 90-minute program will assist participants to explain how audiovisual materials can facilitate the achievement of complex learning objectives as well as identify Roman and historical civil law elements. Legal and historical scholars have long recognized Roman law foundations in European and other civil law systems, as well as the importance of Roman Monarchy and Republic legal institutions and procedures in the development of classical Roman law. This program will demonstrate the educational opportunities afforded by audiovisual materials, as it draws upon the powerful images of the HBO series "Rome," to explain key elements of Roman Law. It will review the relationship between, and government powers of, Senators, Consuls, Praetors, Magistrates, Tribunes, and other officials, as well as law-making authority and procedures, election procedures, court system, trial proceedings, and emergency government procedures. Program speakers will include Ms. Ray and Bernard Keith Vetter, The Ted and Louana Frois Distinguished Professor of International Law Studies, Loyola University New Orleans College of Law. This program is being sponsored by the AALL Legal History and Rare Books Special Interest Section, which Ms. Ray Chairs, the AALL Micrographics/Audiovisual Special Interest Section, and the AALL Foreign, Comparative & International Law Special Interest Section.
