Lap 9 of Research 10K(nowledge) Race

Laura E. Ray, Educational Programming Librarian, laura.ray@law.csuohio.edu | November 09, 2009 - 12:53

The Research 10K(nowledge) Race is almost over - just two more laps!

The Anthony Sowell case has many people wondering about how prisoners are classified, and the status of psychological evaluations of prisoners, in Ohio. You can start to explore these issues by taking this week’s quiz.

1. What Ohio Administrative Code section details the procedure for classifying inmates, and what specific medical factors are included in this procedure? What OAC section discusses inmate classification committees, and are medical personnel required on such committees?

2. Using the BNA Criminal Law Reporter (accessible from the Law Library Electronic Resources page), find a 2005 US Supreme Court case concerning prisoner classification and supermax prisons in Ohio. [Hint - after finding the case, to get the complete citation to it, you will need to do a name search.] How did the Court rule on the Ohio Corrections Department’s classification procedure?

The Research 10K(nowledge) Race is a weekly quiz for CM Law students running September 14th through November 22nd, 2009. Each one kilometer lap is an easy legal research quiz that's posted on the Law Library blog on Monday. [Each quiz is also on the Research 10K(nowledge) Race TWEN course.] Students have until 11:59pm the following Sunday to post their answers on the Research 10K(nowledge) TWEN course.

All quiz correct answers are entered into a weekly drawing for a prize - a gift card for one of our local food or beverage establishments. At the end of the 10-week Race, all correct answer entries from each lap will be entered into a drawing for the grand prize - an iPod shuffle plus a great assortment of food, beverages and much more to help you get through finals! Students can complete as many laps as they like, but chances to win the grand prize increase if they run the whole Race.

To enter the Race, sign on to Westlaw, select TWEN, and add the Research 10K(nowledge) Race course. Then, each week, sign on to the course to record your quiz answers for that week's lap.
