The case which is incorrectly cited in the Sanborn sculpture in the library rotunda is Furman v. Georgia, 408 U.S. 238 (1972). The sculpture cites the case as Thurman v. Georgia.

The issue in Furman was whether the death penalty in the three cases before the court constituted cruel and unusual punishment in violation of the Eighth and Fourteenth Amendments. The U.S. Supreme Court held that the death penalty in these three cases constituted cruel and unusual punishment because it was being imposed in an arbitrary manner. The Court's decision forced states and the national legislatures to rethink their statutes for capital offenses to assure that the death penalty would not be administered in a capricious or discriminatory manner. The oral arguments for this case can be heard at Oyez.org.
