Bluebook Tips in Plain English

Amy Burchfield, Access & Faculty Services Librarian amy.burchfield@law.csuohio.edu | November 12, 2009 - 10:33

Do you ever read a Bluebook rule and just scratch your head and say “Huh”? I do, more often than I’d care to admit. That’s what made it so nice to discover Blue Tips, a listing put out by the editors of the Bluebook that gives “authoritative guidance to reasonable questions on subjects covered by The Bluebook.” I’m just impressed that the editors of the Bluebook concede that a reasonable person could have a question regarding a Bluebook rule.

So if you’re approaching the point of fine tuning the citations in your seminar paper or note, Blue Tips might give you some guidance. You can find tips on cases, cross-references, periodicals, punctuation, quotations, signals, statutes and more.

Blue Tips is on the online Bluebook site [see our earlier post].
